B-vitamins are like the body’s personal cheerleaders, helping us function at our best, especially when it comes to brain health. These power-packed nutrients can help fend off inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, which is sometimes signaled by increased homocysteine levels in our blood.
In a study that gathered a group of healthy adults, researchers wanted to see what would happen if the participants took a high dose of B-vitamins for six months. Using a blend of blood tests and advanced brain imaging techniques before and after the vitamin course, they examined the effect on the participants’ brain and blood metabolism.
What did they find? The high-dose B-vitamin supplements significantly boosted levels of B6 and B12 vitamins and brought down the homocysteine levels. Interestingly, they didn’t notice any changes in the levels of another B-vitamin called folate.
They also discovered interesting connections between the levels of B6 and B12 vitamins and specific brain compounds. Although not a huge change, they also saw a slight increase in a substance in the brain called N-acetylaspartate (NAA).
All these findings suggest that topping up on B-vitamins could be a good move for brain health. The researchers think this might help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and even improve the brain’s cell metabolism and energy storage.
