This wonderful adaptogen has been utilized in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Traditionally, it’s been employed to treat various conditions and promote overall well-being, especially amongst our senior community. Managing quality of life can be challenging as we age, particularly when dealing with joint pain, sleep issues, and maintaining general wellness. With an ever-increasing global elderly population, the need for effective medications and supplements to support quality of life has never been more critical.
The researchers’ mission was to explore the safety, effectiveness, and tolerability of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera(L.) Dunal.) root extract in enhancing overall health and sleep in seniors. We conducted a 12-week, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with participants aged between 65 and 80. The participants were divided to receive either Ashwagandha root extract at a daily dose of 600mg or a placebo of the same dose.
They assessed the effectiveness of this ancient remedy using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, alongside gauging sleep quality, mental alertness upon waking, and Physician’s Global Assessment of Efficacy to Therapy (PGAET). Safety and tolerability were measured through the reporting of clinical side effects and the Global Assessment of Tolerability to Therapy (PGATT) by the patients themselves.
The results? The Ashwagandha group saw a significant improvement compared to the placebo group. The overall WHOQOL-BREF score rose from an initial average of 140.53 to 161.84 by the end of the study. Furthermore, participants reported improvements in individual domain scores. At the start, sleep quality and mental alertness upon waking were relatively low in both groups. However, after treatment, they noted a significant increase in sleep quality and mental alertness in the Ashwagandha group. An overall enhancement was seen in general well-being, sleep quality, and mental alertness among the participants. The test group reported good tolerance to the product and deemed it safe and beneficial.
In conclusion, the research suggests that Ashwagandha root extract was successful in enhancing quality of life, sleep quality, and mental alertness as reported by the senior participants themselves. The recommended dosage used in this study could potentially be beneficial for the wider senior population.
