Saffron is a part of the flower Crocus sativus L. and is known for its rich content of carotenoids, which can influence our immune system.

In a study conducted on healthy male participants (average age 21.4 years), researchers tested the effects of consuming a 100 mg saffron tablet daily for 6 weeks. Here’s what they found:

1. After 3 weeks, saffron increased one type of immune response (IgG) and decreased another (IgM) compared to the starting levels and the placebo group.
2. Saffron reduced the number of certain cells (basophils and platelets) but increased another type (monocytes) when compared to the placebo.
3. By the end of 6 weeks, these changes returned to their original levels.
4. No other significant changes were observed in various immune parameters.
5. Importantly, no side effects were reported from the use of saffron.

In short, taking 100 mg of saffron daily for a short period may have some temporary effects on the immune system, but it appears to be safe with no reported adverse effects.
