Ever thought that a common culinary spice might be the secret to a good night’s sleep? The answer could be hiding in your kitchen: saffron.
A recent study conducted over six weeks involved individuals with mild to moderate sleep issues linked to anxiety. The 66 participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo (maltodextrin) or a saffron extract (15.5mg per day).
To gather objective data on sleep quality, the researchers used a method called actigraphy at the beginning, middle, and end of the study. They also had the participants fill out questionnaires (LSEQ and PSQI) to assess their sleep quality and the SF-36 questionnaire to gauge their quality of life.
The results? Those who took the saffron extract saw improvements in their sleep. They spent longer time in bed, had easier time falling asleep, and overall enjoyed a better sleep quality. These improvements were assessed both objectively (using actigraphy) and subjectively (using the LSEQ and PSQI questionnaires). On the other hand, the placebo group did not see any changes in these parameters.
In summary, these findings suggest that saffron extract could be a natural and safe dietary strategy to enhance both the length and quality of sleep.
