Improve Your Sleep with Saffron Extract.
Saffron, a highly valued spice in the culinary world, has also been recognized for its potential health benefits. A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study has shed light on one such benefit, which involves improving the quality of sleep.
The study, published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine in December 2018, aimed to assess the impact of saffron, on the sleep patterns of healthy adults experiencing mild sleep problems. The participants were given saffron or a placebo over two 14-day intervention periods, with a 14-day wash-out period in between.
Sleep parameters were then assessed using single-channel electroencephalography (a test that records electrical activity of the brain) and a sleep inventory known as the Oguri-Shirakawa-Azumi Sleep Inventory, Middle-age and Aged-version (OSA-MA).
The results were promising. Those who took saffron saw a significant increase in delta power (a type of brain wave associated with deep sleep) compared to those who took the placebo. Moreover, those on saffron reported feeling less drowsy upon waking and a more refreshed feeling overall.
Although there were no significant changes in other sleep parameters, such as sleep latency, sleep efficiency, total sleep time, and waking after sleep onset, the improved subjective sleep quality can be a huge advantage for those struggling with sleep problems.
In conclusion, the study suggests that saffron could be a helpful supplement in enhancing sleep quality.”
