Wondering what’s GABA? It’s a substance known as gamma-aminobutyric acid. It’s already in your brain, and it’s great for health. But did you know it can also protect your cells from oxidative stress?
A group of scientists led by Hyeonjeong Choe, Hana Lee, Junsoo Lee, and Younghwa Kim dove deep into this topic. They found that GABA could be a secret weapon for your cells, making them stronger and better equipped to fight off harmful substances.
When they gave high doses of GABA to cells, these cells fought off harm much better. In fact, the vitality of these cells improved by about 90%. GABA also boosted the power of antioxidant enzymes, helping to clean up harmful substances in the cells. Plus, it reduced the level of reactive oxygen species – a fancy term for harmful substances – by half.
The good news didn’t stop there. GABA also increased the production of some vital protective proteins. These proteins help guard the cells against damage.
In a nutshell, the study suggested that taking GABA supplements might help protect against muscle damage caused by harmful substances.
But where can you find GABA? It’s found in the germ and bran layers of rice. Besides being an amazing cell protector, GABA is also known to have several health benefits like preventing diseases related to alcohol consumption and reducing high blood pressure.
