Discover the exciting findings of a groundbreaking study published in Food Function. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of fish oil supplementation on pro-inflammatory markers in individuals with hypertension. The results are remarkable!
The study involved 77 middle-aged and older volunteers with hypertension who were divided into two groups: the fish oil group (FO) and the control group (CO). For 90 days, the FO group received a daily dose of 2g of fish oil enriched with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while the CO group received control corn oil.
The outcomes were extraordinary! Significant reductions in pro-inflammatory markers were observed in the FO group compared to the CO group. Specifically, levels of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha) and CRP (C-reactive protein) were significantly lowered, indicating a reduction in inflammation. This is fantastic news for individuals with hypertension!
Moreover, the study revealed a positive correlation between the decrease in TNF-α levels and improvements in cardiometabolic risk scores in the FO group. This suggests that fish oil supplementation not only reduces inflammation but also promotes cardiovascular well-being.
Fish oil supplementation led to other beneficial changes as well. The FO group experienced increases in EPA, DHA, and total n-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health. Additionally, levels of 20:4n-6 and total n-6 fatty acids were reduced, resulting in a decreased ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids. These changes contribute to a healthier cardiovascular profile.
The findings strongly indicate that fish oil supplementation can effectively reduce pro-inflammatory responses in individuals with hypertension. By doing so, it holds the potential to enhance cardiometabolic benefits.
